The Daily Commuter’s Survival Guide

Date Created · Sept 30, 2018

The daily commute to work is never fun thanks to the traffic situation that is a reality in most major cities in the Philippines. Inside a jam-packed bus or MRT, you are forced to witness and share the misery of your fellow wage earners. Without so much personal space, you get to share the sweat, the smell of their breath and their misery. If you have experienced this, you are not alone. Millions of employees in major cities in the Philippines have been through this horror story.

Do you know that the daily commute eats up more than 18 months of your life? Though you can’t do anything about the traffic, there are things you can do to lessen the stress of that 18-month sentence. The key here is to break bad habits and to be more creative.

Here are some things you can do to survive the pilgrimage to and from work.

1.) Leave home early

By leaving home early, you will eliminate the unnecessary stress and paranoia caused by thoughts of arriving late for work. It may be quite a challenge at first, but when you notice how fresh you still feel and look when you get to the office you will soon get the hang of it. Try leaving home 30 minutes earlier than usual. You’ll thank yourself for it.

2.) Listen to music

Musical tastes vary. Some love listening to rock or hip-hop when they commute to the office. Others get their groove on through EDM or pop. But no matter what genre you listen to, you will always find solace from the hustle and bustle when you tune in to your jam.

Create a playlist with your favorite songs and let the music take your mind away from the heavy traffic.

3.) Bring snacks with you

Things get worse when you are hungry and thirsty. If you feel like you are going to spend eternity on your ride home, bring along some crackers, chocolate bars and bottles of mineral water with you. If eating on the bus is not your thing, then drop by a convenience store or coffee shop to kill time and have a quick bite before going home.

4.) Stop staring at your phone

If you work in front of a computer during your shift, spending time on social media may just add more stress to your eyes. Rather than scrolling through your Facebook news-feed, it’s much better if you’ll use your phone as a music player instead.

5.) Manage joint pain

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common condition that is caused by the wear and tear of joints. It causes pain and stiffness in your back, neck, knees, hips and fingers. Because of this, the commute becomes really unbearable especially when the pain of osteoarthritis sets in. That’s why it is advisable to take FERN Flex every day. This food supplement contains undenatured type II collagen which with daily use helps in improving pain caused by OA.

Let’s face it. The daily commute may be one of the major causes of mental and physical stress. Follow these practical "pasahero" tips to help you make it through the work week while keeping your sanity intact.
